In Memoriam – Imam Thomas Abdul-Salaam (1953-2015)

“If it is is to be, it is up to me.”–Thomas Abdul Salaam (R), CWSC & American Muslim 360 founder

NATIONAL – The CWSC recently reflected on the life and contributions of its founder and first executive director, Imam Thomas Abdul-Salaam (R).  Believers from around the country sent in expressions of gratitude and remembrance and had a chance to share and reminisce on air at American Muslim 360 (AM360), CWSC’s flagship broadcasting center also founded by our Brother Thomas.

At times emotional, the April 22nd edition of Islam in America Movement hosted by Imam Abdul-Hakim, was nevertheless a celebration featuring Thomas’ widow, Dr. Aisha Kareem, who worked side-by-side with Thomas; together the loving couple were devoted to one another, their families and their community, working tirelessly to build institutions that now serve communities nationwide and beyond. Dr. Aisha now serves as AM360’s CEO and leads CWSC’s international efforts.

We will be forever grateful for Thomas Abdul-Salaam’s sacrifice and service. His voice and vision remain prominent at CWSC and AM360. He was posthumously honored by the CWSC with a national college scholarship in his name.  Click here to learn more about his life and legacy.  We miss you Twin Servant of Peace, but you are with us in word and spirit. May Allah (SWT) reward you immensely for having the wisdom, heart, patience, persistence, and faith to help us make the connections that will help us remake the world.

[Note: Send remembrances to info@cwsc.us and we will pass them on to Dr. Aisha Kareem & family]

From marriage rights to fair labor equity

“Paradise lies at the feet of the mother”–Prophet Muhammed (S)

INTERNATIONAL – Note: Joining representatives from 138 countries, Dr Aisha Kareem, CWSC’s U.N. Liaison, led our U.N. delegation to deliver a powerful statement at the 61st Conference of the Commission on the Status of Women at U.N. Headquarters in New York.

With the assistance of the Model Communities National Resource Directory and our National Think Tank, the following writers and researchers were assembled to help formulate CWSC’s second international publication: Shakira Abdul-Ali (MSOD) – U.N. delegation attendee from New Jersey, AM360 Host Zayd Khan from New York, Dr. E. Fowziyyah Ali from Alabama, Aqila Sharif Hanif from North Carolina, and Dr. Aisha Kareem from California. Our group intellect is making history. Thank you to all who contributed to this magnificent event. Below is the published CWSC Document…

The U.N. Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), in preparation for its sixty-first conference held March 13 – 24, 2017 at U.N. Headquarters, New York City, called for international inputs to the Draft Agreed Conclusions protecting and empowering women’s human, legal, civic and economic rights. CWSC as a national intelligentsia and think tank contributed its support and a position statement to help strengthen implementation of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals for Gender Equality.

Notably for 2017, among the Commission’s reaffirmations are the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action; outcome documents of selected prior special sessions and declarations of the General Assembly and Fourth World Conference on Women; and outcomes from the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against  Women.

The Conclusions herein are derived predominantly from a group intellect whose individual contributors are American Muslims of African-American descent, and residing in the United States of America.

The unique and arguably peculiar circumstances of being a religious and ethnic minority with a history of systemic denial of human and civil rights and a subsequent successful national faith-based socio-political struggle to gain those rights, provide a foundation for insightfully relevant comparative analysis and consideration of solutions to the issues of unfair discrimination against women and girls around the world. There is a bridge between racial injustice and gender injustice, and the common coupling is the devaluation of the inherent human excellence in the person, female or male…Read the entire publication.

AM360 Welcomes Cynthia McKinney back

Landmark interview this Sunday with Latifah Ali…

NATIONAL – The second part of a compelling conversation with political insider former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, is scheduled for this Sunday, April 23rd at 9 a.m. EST.

Dr. McKinney, will join AM360 Special Presentations Host, Latifah Ali for the continuation of an interview conducted earlier this month. Click here for an encore of McKinney’s first appearance on the #1 Islamic Radio Station in the nation.

McKinney made history as the first African-American woman elected to represent Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she served six terms in the United States House of Representatives, before leaving the Democratic Party and running for President of the United States on the Green Party ticket in 2008.

McKinney’s father was also an elected politician and exposed his daughter early to the civil rights struggle and encouraged her to go into politics. McKinney, who earned a B.A. in international relations and an M.A. in Law and Diplomacy, and a Ph.D., along the way became a teacher, university professor, community activist and politician. Considered controversial by some and courageous by others, McKinney is on record as having voted against the 1991 Gulf War and alleging voter fraud in the 2000 presidential election.

Tune in live and join the conversation this Sunday 9 a.m. EST at (515) 605-9891 or log on at American Muslim 360 to listen in.

Getting to Know the CWSC Premiers

AM360 series on building a national intelligentsia premiers April 14…

[Note: Here’s the 1st Episode & 2nd Episode of Getting to Know the CWSC!]

Mukhtar Muhammad, the executive director for Community Wide Shuraa Conference, assumes a new role on Friday, April 14, 2017, when he is scheduled to host the first episode of Getting to Know the CWSC, a special series that will broadcast on American Muslim 360, Fridays 9 a.m. EST every eight weeks for an initial installment of six shows. During specific dates, the series will air in place of the weekly CWSC Friday Roundtable hosted by Mark Shahid.

The show aims to help educate the entire community on CWSC’s conceptualization, evolution and work as a national intelligentsia service center. Listeners will go inside the architecture, mission, vision, and guiding principles of CWSC and its family of intelligentsia components including its broadcasting center, American Muslim 360, to help grow its capacity by educating its audience and ultimately making CWSC services as accessible as possible to institutions around the country.

Mukhtar was unanimously nominated to his office of leadership in 2015 by CWSC volunteers nationwide and elected by the CWSC Board of Directors closely following the passing of founding director Imam Thomas Abdul Salaam (R).  While he’s usually a low key person most comfortable leading unseen, he said recently, “I know there are still many questions and misconceptions about what CWSC is and is not as a national intelligentsia and community service center; sometimes that information has to come directly from the one charged at the helm of an institution. We’ve seen tremendous growth and an acceleration in our diversity, and the time is right to communicate to both CWSC and the broader community about where were seeking to head in serving the group interest. Getting to Know the CWSC will be an excellent opportunity for me to share simultaneously with all audiences.”

Besides being a civic and community leader, Mukhtar is author of the book and blog, Genesis of New American Leadership: Building the Community Life, vice president for FAMACO Publishers, LLC and famacopublishers.com, a distinguished lecturer in the CWSC Speakers Bureau, and member  of  the strategic planning committee  and electoral board  for  the  Islamic Center  of  Orange  Park,  Florida. He is a third generation Muslim, alumnus of Philadelphia’s Muhammad University, and holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in four business concentrations. He’s also a former enlisted and commissioned naval officer, and has served in executive leadership roles inside and outside our Association, including appointment to national leadership service by the late Imam Dr. W. D. Mohammed (R). He has advised institutions throughout the nation on strategic planning and governance issues and is a nationally recognized consultant on organization design, leadership and management issues. Read more about the new host here.

Many around the nation will recognize his name from the international calendar publication, Remaking the World and from Genesis of New American Leadership, the book many institutions associated with the leadership of Imam W. Deen, used to publish their mission and vision statements.  When asked recently about Genesis, Mukhtar states, “I believe American Muslims have an important role to play in helping America regain its footing and trust in itself, following the debacle of wall street, an avoidable recession and a war of choice v. necessity…just to name a few examples of where leadership deficiencies resulted in catastrophic failures and consequences. The American Muslim Community has a vital role to play internationally as an urgent voice of reform. Simultaneously, our domestic contribution is a high priority and will either be enhanced or impeded by our fellow non-Muslim Americans’ understanding of true Islam and acceptance of Muslims as full citizens; so we have a big job. Muslims must find more interdependent ways to enhance our group efforts, work and contributions as American leaders. I believe Genesis can help bridge divides and create a climate for emergence of a new collaborative leadership inside and outside our communities…I also believe we’re in one of the best periods right now to accomplish that.”

A series of six installments are planned beginning April 14 and continuing on the following dates: June 9, August 4, September 29, November 24, and January 19, 2018.  Guest interviews with executive directors of other national organizations are also being planned into the show’s format.

Listeners will be able to engage with the host in a variety of ways including messaging here on our website, at facebook, twitter, email info@cwsc.us, and via voice mail comments on the CWSC line at (910) 317-0297 which we may share with our listenership and of course, you can call in live to American Muslim 360 Radio at (515) 605-9891. Students Apply Now for 5 CWSC College Scholarships

Encouraging academic excellence, civic engagement and history preservation

The WMP ScholarshipScholarships are another intelligentsia component at CWSC and focuses on the fact that while we’re working on any number of issues at any point in time, we must devote resources simultaneously to help secure our next generation intelligentsia leaders. Each February during African American History Month through June, our scholarship cycle opens to qualified matriculating college-bound high school and current college students.

In addition to providing cash funds to pay for higher education, our scholarships feature a historical and cultural preservation component that offers families of pioneers the ability to open nationally supported, tax deductible college scholarships in honor of a pioneer.

Through MAP scholarships, CWSC is a national scholarship administrator helping families establish lasting legacies for those who helped make a home for Al-Islam and/or religious freedom and civil rights in America.  In essence, the next generation will learn about our pioneers’ contributions and be inspired to not only get an education, but to also be civically engaged in helping to remake the world.

Because of the generosity of families in the MAP program and donor support, we now offer five (5) scholarships including the Payton Next Generation Scholarship; Taheerah R. Muhammad Educational Excellence Scholarship; Twin Servant of Peace Excellence in Broadcasting & Communication Scholarship; Words Make People Literary Excellence & Scholarship Award honoring Imam W. Deen Mohammed; and the Yahya K. Muhammad Business & Community Leadership Award.

CWSC Scholarships helps us show our students we care about their future and need their voice and intellect at the table of shuraa baynahum for the community’s future. Encouraging our students and making a contribution to higher education through college funding are great blessings for us all.

To apply starting February 20, contribute to a scholarship or start a scholarship in the name of your loved one, either current or posthumously; visit Scholarships right here at CWSC…their future is our future.
