June 19, 2015Juneteenth: Marking An Emancipation Moment in U.S. Slavery History…150 Years

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the U.S. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19 that Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free… that is two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had become official freeing theoretically if not in actuality all slaves. The Proclamation had little impact on Texans due to minimal Union troop strengths and a diminished capacity to enforce President Lincoln’s Executive Order. With the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to free the last slaves. If the (ra) is supposed to be Radi-Allahu anhu then it should be written as (RA). Because it has a reference to the title/name of our Lord-Creator, Allah it MUST be capitalized.
